pounding the pavement week in and week out for your cardio, I believe, is a mistake you will live to regret. unless you are built like a bird and run with perfect form, the accumulation of wear and tear on your body, knees, hips and lower back will affect your quality of life as you age.

Be creative. By all means do cardio regularly but mix it up.

Even the running machine started breaking down my left knee, from doing 5 days a week. I had to switch to bike and other cardio methods.

4 to 6 days per week works?
Three days a week works for me. Even when I'm training for a 26.2 miler, I don't run more than three times a week. When training, I do a Tuesday medium, a Thursday short, and a Saturday long. For regular cardio maintenance, it is more like 6-8 miles three times per week. Running isn't the only cardio I get, but I only run three days a week.

Disclaimer: I'm no great shakes as a marathoner, but better than average.

What machines do you prefer for cardio?

I like the stairmaster. Not the little stair stepper, but the big one that looks like an escalator. That thing can really get the heart pumping, but may not the easiest on the knees. Also, the exercise bike is good, but it takes more of a concerted effort on my part. I increase the resistance level every three minutes until I can't go any higher, then I tick it back down every two minutes. I'm not into the rower, it is just too herky-jerky for me, but I know people who swear by it. My old gym had a Jacob's Ladder which is a full-body cardio assault. Have you ever tried one of those?

I looked into buying that and they want an arm and a leg, crazy expensive for the legit one.

There was a rotating climbing wall at a gym I used to go to that was tough to do even 15 minutes on. By the time you were finished it felt like your forearms were ready to explode. Seems a little bit like the Jacobs Ladder workout with more emphasis on the upper body. The one at the gym I speak of didn't have the ladder rungs, maybe if it had I could have done a full 30 minutes.

I’ve cut down on my running

used to do 4 miles thrice a week

and 2.75 miles twice a week

Now I run at least 1 mile everyday

and will go up to 4 if I’m feeling fast that day

I ran across a YouTube video the other day where Ric Flair talked about a wrestler who "blew up" and got winded right away in a match.

The Nature Boy recommended he use the Stairmaster.

It must work good for cardio, Ric was legendary for doing 60 minute matches.
